Age Group Policies

Half Lappers:

In response to several concerns, safety and liability being at the forefront, Sherwood Oaks has decided that the following rules apply to these age groups:

  • A “Half-Lapper” is defined, consistent with the League Rules, as a “Six and Under” who cannot swim the length of the pool unaided in 55 seconds or less. (Note that the league rules specify one minute but do to limited lane space and coaches, Sherwood Oaks requires :55.) Your swimmer will have an opportunity to have your child timed at Swim Team Swim test.
  • Half-Lappers will have a 'trial' period after in-water practices start prior to the swim test so that Coach Eva can evaluate them.
  • Six and Under’s and Half-Lappers must be 4 years old by May 1, 2023. We cannot make exceptions to this rule, so please don't ask.
  • Any swimmer who is 6 by May 1st, is able to compete in Full Lappers, without a timed swim test. You may, however, choose to have your child be a Half Lapper if you feel this is a better fit for your swimmer.
  • There will be a swim test at the start of the season to determine if your child is a full or 1/2 lapper.
  • Note: If you’re a 1/2 lapper and don’t continue to the competition season, you will NOT be required to fulfill the 6 point volunteer requirement.
  • If your swimmer is unable to swim 1/2 length by May 13th, you will not continue to the swim team competition season and you will be refunded 50%

Six and Unders - Full Lappers:

  • Six and Under’s must be 4 years old by May 1, 2023. We cannot make exceptions to this rule.
  • Any swimmer who is 6 by May 1st, is able to compete in Full Lappers, without a timed swim test. You may, however, choose to have your child be a Half Lapper if you feel this is a better fit for your swimmer.
  • Any 4 or 5 year old must have timed prior to the beginning of swim team in under :55 seconds to compete, per MSBSC rules in the 6U age group.
  • All 6U's will be competing in two events - Individual Freestyle and Mixed Freestyle Relay (boys and girls). A few swimmers, based on ability and time, will compete in the Backstroke. The backstroke swimmers will be announced several days before the meet.
  • All events will be 25 yards.
